Member Spotlight: Sam Murray, Assistant Treasurer
Sam is one of our older members but his age doesn’t slow him down. He is still our Assistant Treasurer and attends all board meetings when he isn’t vacationing in Florida.
Sam started out as a volunteer fireman at the age of 22 at the Smithsburg Fire Company. When the town people of Paramount started talking about starting a fire station in Paramount, Sam left Smithsburg and became involved in the establishment of the Long Meadow Volunteer Fire Company at age 34.
Throughout the years, Sam served many rolls at Long Meadow ranging from President, Treasurer, Assistant Chief, and Fire Police. He is still an active fire police for us.
Sam has been married to his wife Patsy since 1962. They have 2 children and 6 grandchildren. When Sam wasn’t volunteering at the fire company, he was working his day job as a systems analyst at Mack Truck. Sam likes to work on crossword puzzles and Sudoku in his free time.
Sam noted that some of his best memories was the satisfaction of getting Long Meadow started and off the ground. They had a fair amount of opposition to contend with from surrounding fire companies but that didn’t stop them. The land and original building cost $10,000.
Sam said that the best part of Long Meadow are the people. He noted that the people of Long Meadow have always been good to work with and dedicated.
