Halloween Party And A Fire

On Saturday Night, the Fire Chief and his wife hosted the annual costume party.  Members, employees, friends and family had a good time dressing up, dancing and cutting loose.  The Deputy Chief ensured there was staffing around to protect Paramount.  Thanks to those that made the sacrifice to remain available.  They were rewarded with some action later in the evening.

At about 2210hrs, the Leitersburg Box was dispatched for the house fire on Beck Road.  Engine 27-1 and Truck 27 responded with 6 firefighters while 3 more remained on station.  Longmeadow units assisted with some fire attack, ventilation, lighting and overhaul.  Units cleared in about 4 hours.

Fire pictures soon to follow (with the help of the Washington County Photo Team...).

Pedestrian Struck On Northern Ave.

At about 1540Hrs, HFD Engine 2, Longmeadow, Rescue Squad 13 and CRS were dispatched for the pedestrian struck.  Engine 27-1 was in the area on driver's training and arrived shortly after dispatch.  Deputy Chief 27 arrived along with HFD Captain 32- Brain Pile and reduced the assignment to the units on the scene and the Medic Unit from 75 (much to the surprise of Rescue Engine 27-2 responding additionally).  Units had an juvenile skate boarder struck by a passing vehicle, no doubt going 25mph.  Longmeadow Firefighters assisted with patient care and traffic control with the help of Hagerstown's Division 1 Fire Police.

More Fire Prevention and a "Chimly" Fire

While operating at a public education event for the Boy Scouts at Paramount Elementary School, The Meadow was alerted to assist Leitersburg VFC (Co. 9) with a chimney fire.  Truck 27, SU27 and Assistant Chief Adam Hopkins responded with 9 firefighters.  One crew from 27 assisted 9 with interior operations while the Truck crew went to the roof.  The roof crew dropped a bomb to assist with extinguishment.  The fire was contained to the chimney and Command 9 (Chief 9- Kirk Lester Mongan) released the units in about 1 hour.

Later in the day, Truck 27 was called to transfer to HFD Truck 1 in Downtown Hagerstown.  Truck 27 covered the City while they operated on a 2 alarm building fire.  Click here for details of the fire.  The crew of four, led by Firefighter Adams ran zero calls on the transfer.

On the way back to Paramount, Longmeadow was alerted for a burn patient due to a grease fire, with the fire reported as out.  The truck responded and confirmed the fire was out and assisted CRS with patient care.

Passing Of A Life Member

Life Member Gladys Louise Roche passed away Monday October 16th.  In the past, Gladys was very active with the Longmeadow Ladies Auxiliary.  She was always willing to help at fundraisers and would often rally the ladies of Paramount to provide baked goods for our Chicken BBQ's and Bake Sales.  Gladys was part of an active family around Longmeadow years ago.  Her son is a former chief and her late husband is the namesake of the John J. Roche Award, given yearly to an administrative member that has gone above and beyond what is expected.

Funeral services will be held Friday at 10 a.m. at Mt. Zion Lutheran Church, Locust Grove, MD. Pastor John Hoffman of Maugansville Bible Brethren Church will officiate with Pastor Joseph Quesenberry, Zion Assembly of God, performing the eulogy.

A viewing will be held Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Bast Funeral Home, Boonsboro, Md.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Maugansville Bible Brethren Church, 17904 Binkley Avenue, Maugansville, MD 21767 or to the Long Meadow Volunteer Fire Company Auxiliary, 19307 Longmeadow Road, Hagerstown, MD 21742.

Apple Harvest Transfers- Round 2

For the second weekend in a row, Longmeadow sent firefighters to Ardentsville, PA to cover for their Apple Harvest Festival.  On Saturday, a crew of four went up.  They ran a medic call (surprise, surprise...).  Firefighter Gary Martin decided he didn't need to run that call, so he left the Truck go without him.  On the way back to Paramount, the crew Squirreled a working van fire on the outskirts of Waynesboro.  Co. 27 firefighters assisted with extinguishment.

On Sunday, Longmeadow sent 8 firefighters to staff Adams Engine 5-1 and Tower 5.  Crews ran zero calls, but were teased by a 2 alarm motel fire that was working in another part of the county.  Pap Schlosser said it was OK we didn't run the fire, because the Getty Mart didn't have enough snuff for that kind of operation.  Although we didn't run the 20 calls a day like we were promised, crews still had a good time.  Thanks to Zack for "mowing the grass" while we were there...

Apple Harvest Transfers

Again this year, Longmeadow has agreed to assist our brothers from Adams County Company 5- Ardentsville as they work the National Apple Harvest Festival in their first due.  Each year, this 2 weekend event draws thousands of visitors to this small town (Estimated to be about 30,000 people a day).  Firefighters from Company 5, under the great leadership and parking experience of Pap Schlosser, take on the task of parking all these visitors through out several fields and valleys.  It has been said in the past that we are pretty much guaranteed ten to fifteen calls per day during this event.  The most we've ever run was 2.

Monday Night Training

Weekly training this week consisted of visiting several first due farms to discuss issues related to responding to barn fires, silo fires and other hazardous situations that may be encountered.  Senior firefighter Richard Baer led the class with help from Firefighter Martin and Firefighter Martin.  Although our first due is constantly being developed, Firefighter Baer works hard to ensure we don't forget about the farms we still have.
