Storms- Day 2 Brings 18
Calls
So far, an average of
17 Longmeadow firefighters have handled the day's flooding conditions
and "water rescues". Crews are standing by for the next round...
The next round began
around 1930 with calls to assist Co. 9 (Leitersburg) with several houses
with a few feet of water in their basements. While 2 units
operated in The 'Burg, Longmeadow handled about 5 calls in the First
Due. Utility 27 and The Pump also stopped in to lend a hand with a
water rescue on the Antietam Creek. Although these calls aren't
the most exciting, Longmeadow averaged 15 firefighters for the evening.
Thanks to the Leitersburg VFC Ladies Auxiliary for providing refreshing
beverages on the calls.

Storms- Day 1 Brings 11
Calls
With storms pounding
the area, Longmeadow firefighters have been busy with the usual calls.
Crews handled several flooding conditions, medic assists and automatic
alarms during the day and evening. Longmeadow then sent 6
firefighters to Co. 7 (Smithsburg) to staff their Rescue Engine and
Engine Tanker. The transfer crews ran 1 call, while the crews in
Paramount also ran a call. In all, 21 firefighters either ran the
transfer or remained home to cover the First Due. Upon returning
from the transfer, we found the power to our building was out due to a
flooded, underground transformer. Assistant Chief Hopkins did the
reports by flashlight.

While on the
transfer, Jeremy helped Smithsburg VFC raise some funds by buying a
ticket to smash the car.

Engine, Truck on HFD
2-Alarmer
At 0149hrs, Truck 27
was alerted for the smoke in the building call at the old Hagerstown
YMCA building, currently Shilo Ministries Retreat Center. HFD
units, including Captain 31 (Mayhue) arrived with normal conditions.
Things soon went down-hill when firefighters discovered fire on the
second floor. Truck 27 arrived and went to work on Side Delta,
laddering the building, opening up and helping to stretch lines off the
Stick. HFD soon requested the Second alarm bringing Rescue-Engine
27-2 to the scene. The Engine parked and crews went to work
inside.
This was a stubborn
fire located in the old apartment section of the building. It
required long hand line stretches and hard work by all involved.
Firefighters from HFD Utility 3 exhausted their first bottles in high
heat and smoke conditions before reaching any fire rooms. Luckily,
command had RE 27-2 crews bring spare bottles inside. The HFD
firefighters simply backed out to a safer location, changed bottles,
then went right back to work.
Longmeadow responded
with 8 firefighters, and cleared after about 7 hours.

The Squads snuggle...

Will it reach the 3rd floor?
Hmm, guess it will.

Fourth of July Yard Sale!!-
Update!
Again this year, Longmeadow will
be taking an active roll in the "Mile Long Yard Sale" held in the
Paramount area. If you've never been to this event, few words can
do it justice. Every inch of Longmeadow Road, most of Fountainhead
and Paramount Manor will be covered with yard sales. The traffic
grinds to a halt and people flood the area. Over the years, as the
event has grown, we at Longmeadow have tried to use the event to raise
funds. Again this year, we will be selling roast beef sandwiches,
hotdogs and hamburgers, along with assorted drinks. Stop by our
food stand and support a good cause- your local Fire Company.
We also rent out space in and
around our station to vendors wanting to get in on the action.
However, we have sold out of spaces to rent! Thanks to all the
vendors who are supporting us. Again, stop in and see us for some
refreshing beverages, snacks, and bargains!

Longmeadow Stands By For
"Lucky 13"
On Saturday night,
Longmeadow sent 5 firefighters under the direction of Assistant Chief

enjoyed, their annual "Lucky 13" Money Bonanza. The crew joined
firefighters from Franklin County Co. 3 (Greencastle, PA) who ran the
engine company. The Meadow Crew ran 3 calls on the night, none of
which turned out to be very noteworthy. Longmeadow maintained an
average of about 10 firefighters back in the First Due through out the
evening.
