Enforcing The Burn Ban Keeps Crews Busy

Since the burn ban was enacted in Washington County, Longmeadow has responded to about 6 outside fires.  Most residents gladly extinguished their fires, some had us help them, while others denied any knowledge of a fire.   Of the last 11 calls handled by Co. 27, 5 were outside fires and 6 were Medic Assist.

A Change In The Meadow

After serving the Longmeadow Volunteer Fire Company as a Lieutenant for the past 3 years, Terry Martin has decided to step down.  Terry has played a huge roll in the growth of Longmeadow in recent years.  In the early 1990's, Longmeadow held a community meeting to recruit new members and inform the public about the commitment it takes to be a volunteer firefighter.  Longmeadow was in desperate need of volunteers.  Terry Martin answered the call, Terry was the only one to answer the call that day.  He joined as an EMS member, but soon began taking fire classes, but we could never completely get that EMS bug out of him.

Terry has always played a vital roll in the building and grounds side of running a fire company.  From purchasing much needed toilet paper to orchestrating the purchase of the new "mini-barn" storage shed behind the station, Terry has been there when called for several years.  However, as the commitment of family life and being the owner-operator of his own business, Tree Movers, has started to take a toll, Terry has decided to step down as a Lieutenant.  He will remain very active as a firefighter, driver and EMT with Longmeadow, and will no doubt be there whenever there is an odd job to be done around the station.

At the April Board Meeting, the Board of Directors approved the appointment of Terry's replacement.  Jeff Byard will be the new 2nd Lieutenant, and Matt Byard will be promoted to 1st Lieutenant.

Thanks to Terry for all he's done for Longmeadow as an Officer, and for all we're sure he'll continue to do in the future.  I can speak for all the Officers when I say it has been a pleasure serving with you, Terry.

Mulch Delivered To The Wrong Address

At about 0930hrs, Longmeadow was dispatched along with Rescue Squad 13 and Medic 759 from Community Rescue for the PIA, reported as a dump truck over turned on Longmeadow Road.  Rescue Engine 27-2, Deputy Chief 27 (Eckstine) and Utility 27 responded and confirmed a dump truck hauling mulch on its side with no injuries.  Crews stabilized the scene before turning it over to the Washington County Sheriff's Department.

Bonanza A Big Success

Thanks to everyone that supported our Bonanza Saturday night, and congratulations to all the winners.  This has become a exciting fundraiser for us.  A special thanks to all the volunteers that worked the event, and to those that remained available to run calls.  Longmeadow handled a fuel spill during the event and an AFA immediately afterwards with Co. 13 (Maugansville).   I was told the moon was very beautiful that night...
