At 1408 hours, Longmeadow
firefighters and HFD Engine 3 were dispatched to Godloves Liquors on
Antietam Drive for a furnace malfunction. Lt Martin responded and
was advised by Headquarters that a contractor was working on the furnace
and that it was on fire. Engine 3 arrived with heavy black smoke
coming from the chimney and roof areas. The operator of Engine 3 and
personnel from HFD Utility 3 investigated and found fuel oil burning in
the area of an attic furnace. Lt Martin assumed command and
requested the Box to be filled and an additional ladder truck.
Engine 27-1 reverse laid from Truck 27 on side 2, to the nearest hydrant
on Eastern Blvd while the Truck laddered the roof. Firefighters
accessed the fire and extinguished it using foam. This was a labor
intensive job requiring extensive overhaul and property conservation.
