At 1636hrs, units from Longmeadow were alerted for a carbon monoxide emergency with a sick person in the 19200 block of Shiloh Church Road. Lieutenant 27 arrived on scene and established Shiloh Church Road Command and units were assigned TAC3 by FRC. Truck 27's crew metered the house, with highest reading being of only 1ppm CO. The resident advised that she believed she may have a problem with her furnace and chimney, so the Truck laddered the house and investigated both the furnace and the chimney. At 1254hrs, FRC alerted Duty 27 to investigate an audible alarm coming from an unknown location in the 19100 block of Longmeadow Road. Lieutenant 27 responded and found the alarm to be coming from a residence with no one home and requested Truck 27 started to assist. Upon the Truck's arrival and further investigation, it was found that the house was fully charged with smoke. At this time, LT27 established Longmeadow Road Command and FRC completed Box 27-5 for the structure fire. Truck 27's crew forced entry through a door on side alpha and encountered a heavy smoke condition. At this time, Command requested the Working Fire Assignment. Truck 27's crew did a primary search and advanced a 1 3/4" handline into the residence. The primary search came back negative and the smoke condition was being caused by a pellet stove that was left burning and had a clogged pipe. Engine 13-1's crew laddered the roof and checked the other chimney's for blockages and found none. Company 27 crews then ventilated the house and assisted the homeowner. Company 27 units cleared in a little over an hour.

Longmeadow Assists Mutual Aid Departments on 2 Fatal Fires

Within 2 days, Longmeadow assisted our neighboring fire departments on 2 fatal fires that took the lives of 6 people ranging in ages from 6 to 70 yrs old.  At 4:42am on Saturday December 10th, Truck 27 was dispatched in place of Franklin County Truck 17 who had failed on a house fire with entrapment in Greencastle, PA.  Truck 27, while not being dispatched until other units reached scratch time, arrived second with a crew of 6.  Longmeadow firefighters made several rescue attempts but were unable to make access due to heavy fire conditions through out the house.  The truck then knocked down the fire with the ladder pipe, allowing firefighters to make their way into the house and confirm 3 fatalities.

Early Sunday morning, the 11th of December, several Southern Washington county units were dispatched on another house fire with entrapment.  Crews from Boonsboro and Sharpsburg faced flashover conditions in an attempt to rescue three boys ages 17 and 18 years old.  In total, 3 kids were killed and 3 people were transported to the local trauma center.  The town of Boonsboro is a small, tight-knit community.  It was obvious that the fire department would need a long term transfer while they handled the business at hand.  Longmeadow firefighters handled the transfer when no other companies could.  Engine 271 transferred to Co 6 for over 8 hours.
