On Saturday,
February 14th, the members of Longmeadow gathered for the annual awards
banquet. President Robert Flint commented on the achievements of the
organization over the last year and gave special mention to those people
who made the growth of the company possible.
Chief Latimer
spoke about the operational accomplishments of the company, highlighting
the two federal grants and manning per call approaching the double digits.
Several awards
were given out to recognize the outstanding achievement of members
throughout the organization.
- The Roche
memorial award was given to Mrs. Rachel Eckstine for dedication above
and beyond the call of duty.
-
- The Chiefs
Award was given to Assistant Chief Scott Ricker for his dedicated years
of service as a chief officer.
-
- The
Firefighter of the year award was given to FF Christopher Turner for his
unsurpassed dedication to the organization on all fronts and willingness
to push himself to higher standards within the company.
-
- Chief Latimer
was also had the special opportunity of awarding Lt Jason Eckstine, FF
Bill Haines, FF Adam Hopkins and FF Zach Thomas with a Medals of Valor.
These firefighters rescued a downed firefighter during an incident in
August of 2003.

At 0319 hours, box
27-1 was alerted for a building fire at 1260 Security Road, The St Lawrence
Cement Company. Engine 3 arrived finding heavy smoke. Capt 27
arrived and assumed command. Command immediately requested an
additional engine and truck as well as the air unit. Truck 27 laid in
while Engine 27-1 supplied Engine 3. Engine 10-1 and 27-1 staged for
water supply while Truck 27 established scene lighting and ventilation.
Truck 1 established a RIT Team. The fire started as a result of a
malfunction of a large electrical panel in the basement of the facility.
The fire is believed to have caused several thousand dollars in damage.
Units cleared the scene around 0500.

At
1906 hours, Truck 27 was alerted for a second alarm apartment fire
at 201 E. Franklin Street. Captain -32 sent Truck 27's crew in to assist
with a search effort. The city crew that was working with Longmeadow
found a victim in a bathroom and assisted with removing the victim from
the structure. The crews then went back in to finish the search.
Truck 27's crew helped perform overhaul until Captain 3-2 asked Truck 276
to transfer to HFD Truck 1.
