At 0400 on Tuesday August 31st, Franklin County, PA units were dispatched to a barn fire. With most of the Franklin County units meeting fail time, Franklin County called for help from Washington County. Engine 27-1 (Responding as an engine-tanker) responded with five firefighters under the direction of Captain Eckstine. Company 13, Maugansville, also responded with an Engine-tanker and Rescue Squad. Upon arrival, 27-1 sent its firefighters to the scene while the rig off-loaded water. Throughout the fire, the crews operated handlines as well as staffed Franklin Tower 9. Engine 27-1 drafted from a dump tank and supplied water down a lane to the barn. Ass't Chief Byard pumped water for several hours to the Company 27 crews that were
operating the ladder pipe. It was a good show by the Maryland boys who were also joined on scene by Leitersburg Tanker 9.

On Saturday, August 28th,
firefighters from Longmeadow were happy to help at a local birthday party.
We were invited to surprise Nate and his friends on his 4th birthday.
This was a great trip for the firefighters from Longmeadow who have been
to Nate's house several times in the past under different circumstances.
The kids climbed on the ladder truck and tried on the gear. The big
kids from the Meadow were glad they could have fun with the little kids from
the party.

Longmeadow has recently taken
delivery of a 2004 Chevy Tahoe to be used as a duty officer vehicle.
Chief Latimer picked up the vehicle on Friday the 20th. It will go
to be painted the traditional Longmeadow Slime-lime this week. The
unit will be designated as Car 27 and will replace the Caprice we
currently have. The new unit should be in service in the next 2 - 3
weeks.

On August 18th, Longmeadow
firefighters met with a representative from Commonwealth Rescue to
demonstrate and try out the Genisis Rescue Tool System. Company 27
is preparing to place in service a Rescue Engine in late December and
Genisis is one of 3 rescue tool manufactures we are looking at. The
firefighters at Longmeadow have been working hard to become Rescue
Technicians and refresh their skills. We used a wide array of tools
trying to determine what kind of setup will work best for us and we look
forward to trying out the other brands.

On Monday August 16th, Longmeadow
firefighters were honored to participate in funeral services for former
Community Rescue Service Chief Frank Murray. Chief Murray served CRS
when they were stationed on Franklin Street and relied heavily on home
response. Chief Murray taught some of Longmeadow's "older" members
EMT and served as chief of CRS for 10 years. The members of Company
27 wish to send their condolences to the members of CRS and those in the
EMS community that have been touched by Chief Murray's service.
While Engine 27-1 was participating
in the services and procession, Engine 27-2, Truck 27 and Maugansville's
Engine 13-2 operated on an automatic fire alarm in Company 27's first due
area.

On Tuesday, August 3rd, Firefighters
from Longmeadow and our neighbors from Maugansville, Company 13, joined
forces for a fundraiser at Pizza Hut on Pennsylvania Ave. The crews
enjoyed a hearty meal before greeting customers and raising money.
Pizza Hut donated 20% of the evenings earnings directly to the fire
departments, and their staff told us that this was the busiest and most
lively fundraiser they've ever had. Firefighters from both companies
showed off their specialized rigs, Rescue Squad 13 and Truck 27. The
crews from Longmeadow would like to thank Maugansville for a great
evening, and thank Pizza Hut for their support. Finally, we would
like to thank the community for coming out to support this great event.
During the fundraiser, Engine 27-1
responded to a gasoline spill that resulted from a 5 year old child trying
to put gasoline in his bicycle.
